Lafcadio Hearn traveled extensively throughout his life. He was born in 1850 on Santa Mauro, an island in the Ionian Sea. From there he moved to Ireland, London, Paris, various cities in the United States, and eventually to Japan where he became a Japanese citizen. He worked primarily as a newpaper writer, editor, and translator. Hearn enjoyed the macabre, and many of his stories are about ghosts and the supernatural. He died in 1904.
